Ingredients
1 loaf challah or French bread, sliced thick
3 apples, peeled, de-seeded and sliced thinly
175 mL (3/4 cup) brown sugar
45 mL (3 tablespoons) butter, melted
8 eggs, whipped
250 mL (1 cup) milk
10 mL (2 teaspoons) ground cinnamon
5 mL (1 teaspoon) ground nutmeg
5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract
5 mL (1 teaspoon) salt
Powdered sugar, to taste
Maple syrup, to taste
Instructions
Layer bread and apple slices in a 23×33 centimetre (9×13 inch) baking dish, making sure apple slices are evenly distributed between the sliced bread
Sprinkle brown sugar over the bread and apple slices
Pour butter evenly over the top of the brown sugar
In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt
Pour the egg mixture over the bread, making sure to thoroughly saturate the bread
Cover dish with plastic wrap to seal
Place in the fridge for a few hours or overnight
Preheat oven to 180 C (350 F)
Remove plastic wrap and bake for 30 minutes (or long enough for the bottom of the dish to be cooked)
Remove from oven and cool for about 5-10 minutes
Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, then slice and serve.
