Ham and Potato Bake

 

A buttered casserole dish gets layers of potatoes and ham before having the sauce poured over and topped with panko crumbs.

INGREDIENTS
Sauce
1/4 cup butter melted
1 small onion (sliced)
1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 cups milk
3/4 cups chicken stock
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
salt and pepper to taste (start with 1/4 tsp. each)
butter (to cover 5 x 9 casserole)
Layers
1 large potato (sliced thinly 1/4 inch)
ham to layer (approx. 12 slices)
Topping
1/3 cup of Panko crumbs.
2 tbsp. butter

INSTRUCTIONS
Melt sauce butter in a medium pan and saute onion until soft (not coloured). Stir in flour and stir for 30 seconds to get rid of the raw flour taste. Slowly add in the milk and chicken stock stirring to make a smooth sauce. Add seasoning.
To assemble; butter casserole, layer of potatoes, ham, potatoes, ham and end with potatoes. Pour over sauce, top with panko and dot with butter.
Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 F.
