I have a lot of fond memories from my childhood, especially when I used to visit my grandparents on the weekends. Every time I walked through the door, there was always a treat waiting for me and my favorite was rock candy! Not only did I eat it at my grandmother’s house, she made it with me!
It never ceased to amaze me that she could make something so absolutely delicious. Now that I’m a grandparent myself, I recognize that she got as much pleasure out of it as I did.
I spent years missing my grandmother, but now I have this rock candy recipe to help me remember. I’m pleased to share it with you, not only so that you can make this delicious treat from your childhood but you can also share it with your kids (and grandkids)!
The first step is to cut wooden skewers in half. You will also need some basic ingredients of water, sugar, clothespins and a few Mason jars
The amount of water and sugar that is necessary will vary, depending upon your needs. I would limit it to 2 skewers per jar, as that is easier to manage.
As a basic recipe, you start with 4 cups of water in a large saucepan and pour in 4 cups of sugar. Bring the water to a low boil and continue adding the sugar 1 cup at a time until it is completely mixed in with the water. There should be no solid sugar remaining. Turn off the heat and allow the water to cool for approximately 15 minutes.
Soak the skewers in water and roll them in some sugar. The sugar that sticks to the skewer will start the crystallization process. Allow the skewers to dry completely before proceeding. You may even want to prepare the skewers in advance.
Pour the sugar solution into Mason jars and add food coloring, if desired. It is not necessary to add food coloring, as you can make clear or white rock candy but adding food coloring will add to the fun!
Lower the skewers into the Mason jars slowly. You don’t want to wash off the sugar that is on the skewers. Don’t allow the skewers to touch the sides, bottom or each other. The new crystals will grow on the skewers, so leave them enough room to do so. Use the clothespins to keep the skewers in place.
The final step is to have a little patience. It is going to take about a week before the process is complete, so put them on a windowsill or in another warm, sunny spot.
After waiting a week, pull the skewers out of the water and you will have a delicious treat that will remind you of your childhood! Share them with someone you love.
